Mikie Wesley is the Teacher of our 4/5 Year Old Enrichment class. She began teaching at St. Mary Preschool in November 2019. She holds a business degree from the University of Virginia. After volunteering at local elementary schools she discovered her love of teaching young children and earned a Masters of Arts in Teaching from Queens University of Charlotte. She taught second and third grade before her oldest child was born.
She and her husband Mike have lived in Hudson and have been members of St. Mary Parish since 2011. Both her boys Ben and William attended and loved St. Mary Preschool and both took part in the Enrichment Class. Mikie aims to create a kind and compassionate classroom while reinforcing and extending skills the children are learning in their regular class.
Why do you enjoy working with young children?
When you work with children, you are guaranteed to smile and laugh everyday! Children bring such joy and genuine interest in life and learning into the classroom every single day. Additionally, I love seeing the flash of understanding and excitement in a child’s eye when something new clicks for them, or when they have an amazing story to tell, or when you share a laugh with them. Truly, you will never smile more than when you work with children.
What have young children taught you?
Children remind us to slow down and remember what matters most in life. Kindness, compassion, appreciating differences, and contributing to the good of our community (or classroom) are the lessons I want my students to carry through life and instill in others.
Children also remind me of the importance of life long learning. Wether it’s reading a new book, learning how to ski at age 40 (yikes!), or traveling to a new city or country, I hope to always be learning alongside my students.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I love to be outside - from walking my dog, to vacations at the beach, to watching my boys play baseball, I love the outdoors. I also enjoy reading and traveling, volunteering in the schools and community, and of course spending time with my family.
